On April 29, 2014, HPC staff was proud to attend and support the Philadelphia’s Department of Public Health and the Mayor of Philadelphia at the signing of an executive order to expand smoke-free recreation spaces to include all City-owned parks.
This order expanded on the previous executive order that was signed in April of 2011. The previous executive order made all recreation centers in Philadelphia 100% smoke-free and encompassed a smoking ban on all recreation center property – indoors or outdoors, including playgrounds, ball fields, courts, parking lots, lawns, and pool areas.
This is a great step forward in the quest for clean air; especially because Philadelphia is home to the largest city owned park system in the world, Fairmount Park. Fairmount Park is made up of 63 neighborhood parks that encompassing over 9,200 acres of land within the City. Some of the largest of these parks include: East and West Park (along the Schuylkill river), Franklin D. Roosevelt Park (South Philly), Pennypack (running through Northeast Philly), Poquessing Park (Far Northeast Philly), Tacony Creek Park (Cheltenham) and Wissahickon Vally Park (Northwest Philly). Also included in the order are the 5 Center City Squares (Center, Washington, Franklin, Logan & Rittenhouse).
In addition to the improved air quality and diminished cigarette liter, the city hopes that decreased visibility of smokers in public places to children and teens will lead to fewer future smokers and therefore healthier communities’ and a healthier Philadelphia.
