Health Literacy
Project
HPC initiated the Health Literacy Project in 1988 and it is the cornerstone
of health communication activities. The Project's goal is to close the
communication gap between low income, high risk consumers and their
providers. It currently provides consultation services locally and nationally.
The Health Literacy Project works closely with local
and national experts on health communications and is a founding member
of the Clear Language Group Consortium (www.clearlanguagegroup.com).
Community
Healthcare Interpreter Training
Since most health communication is verbal, interpreter services are
becoming more critical to the effective delivery of health care and
social services. HPC's certified interpreter training program was established
in 1998 and has trained nearly 100 interpreters since that time.
Health communications efforts must also translate across
cultures. HPC's Asian Health
Projects and Latino
Health Projects are experienced in many areas of multi-lingual,
multi-cultural communications.
The principles of culturally relevant and literacy appropriate
communication are infused throughout all of HPC's direct service and
advocacy programs.
