Health Promotion Council has been providing medical interpreter training to professional interpreters and bilingual staff at non-profit organizations beginning in 1998 in Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley. The course follows the model "Bridging the Gap" established by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) of Seattle, Washington under a licensed agreement. The 40-hour certification course covers the roles and responsibilities of the interpreter, the US health care system, anatomy and medical procedures, and cultural self- awareness.
The course consists of 5 days of intensive training and you must be bilingual to participate. Each participant will be provided with a 400-page interpreter manual, English and bilingual medical glossaries, culture-specific materials, and a guide to common medications. Certification will be issued after successful completion of the entire training directly from CCHCP. HPC offers this opportunity three times per year. Space is limited to 15 people per training. So please register early!
